By now, every driver knows the dangers of texting and driving. North Carolina even has a ban on doing it. However, people still whip out their phones and text while driving. It may seem like the ban is not doing any good. After all, if people want to do something, they often do not let the law stop them. So, does a texting and driving ban work? According to CNN, studies show that a texting ban does have benefits.
Studies show that states with texting bans had four percent fewer people going to emergency rooms due to car accidents than states without bans. The harsher the law was in a state, the fewer ER visits that state had up to an eight percent reduction.
This is one of the first studies that show positive results. Previously, there did not seem to be an impact as the bans were introduced in various states. Many previous studies, though, focused on deaths relating to crashes and not injuries. It is also important to note that the study only looked at states with texting laws and only one state without.
Distracted driving is a serious issue. It hurts everyone, even those who do not text and drive. In fact, this study showed that states with a texting ban saw a reduction in seniors being injured in crashes, which is interesting since this age group is the least likely to text and drive. This information is for education, and it does not constitute legal advice.
